The new number 9 for Forest
it’s a good fit. He thrived at Ipswich, and arguably they are a similar club to us these days. We needed a new striker and we got a good quality experienced player for the younger strikers to learn from. He can only help Cummins, Walker and Brereton realise their potential. Yes in stature he is similar to Vellios, but Vellios is also a strong skilful player. Murphy will lead the line whereas Vellios brings others into play. He might prove to not net as many goals as we’d hope, but there’s so many other goal scoring options we didn’t have last season. I think we will see more good than bad from Murphy, but at 34 there’s always the risk of niggles becoming longer term delays. Murphy says he’s never felt fitter so maybe that’s not an issue, and players look after themselves these days.
Daryl Murphy, being unveiled at Forest |
Daryl Murphy is a £2million pound signing for Forest who
will likely spearhead the clubs attacks this season. So here is a profile on
Daryl. The 34 year old is from Ireland, born in Waterford. He is 6’2 tall. His
career has taken him around England, as well as a spell at Waterford United. He
came to attention at Sunderland, but with numerous prominent spells at Ipswich
Town. Last season he signed for Newcastle as they got promoted, before joining
us.
Daryl, according to Wikipedia has scored 88 career goals in
367 starts. He has 26 caps for Ireland with just 1 goal, which he scored
against Serbia.
What do Newcastle fans think of his departure?
Newcastle fans have been extremely positive about Daryl and
praised him for his role in the promotion last season. We have taken a range of
sources for these views.
From the Newcastle Footy Mad Forum
“Good luck to the lad,
total pro while here, scored a few vital goals and always gave 100%, great to
see folk wishing him well.”
And
“Murphy did his job
man, got some important goals and was a shrewd acquisition in my opinion.
The supposed £1.5m loss on him was more than covered by the points he won to help gain promotion.
Good luck to him, he'll do alright at Forest under Warburton.”

Newcastle Chronicle
ran an article featuring Toon fan tweets, and they included the following
comments
“Hope
Daryl Murphy bangs them in for #NFFC. Came in and did a faultless job for
#NUFC. His header at Brentford was one of my goals of the season.”
And
“Daryl Murphy did what was needed of him @NUFC, scored vital
goals to promotion , great professional who will no doubt do well @NFFC #nufc”
And a few of Facebook comments to Newcastle announcing his
departure
“ Pity. Strong in the air and changed a few games when he came on. Should
have had more games IMHO.”
“Can't say anything bad about him. Was a
valuable squad player last term who delivered when asked upon. Good luck at
forest”
“Sad to see him go,
owed a lot of our promotion too him! Regular football in the championship and
he will be a great signing.....”
The Managers View
Warburton said post game with
Girona on Murphy. “He
is absolutely ready to be starting games – he started today against Premier
League opposition.
“You saw the
impact he had, he had some clever touches, he got into the box and he was an
aerial threat. I was really pleased for him. He adds quality to the squad.”
Clearly Warburton wants that aerial threat in the box. With
good deliverers of the ball like Osborn and McKay Murphy will get chances with
the head and the foot. The Post has not featured too many quotes from Warburton
about Murphy.

Value for Money
At 34 and at £2million probably not, but what is value for money
these days. He has bags of experience and offers an aerial threat. His wages won’t
have been cheap, but the fact he came here instead of another options speak
volumes of his hunger to play, and that drive is invaluable. If you consider
that it seems £2million gets you a season a top Championship striker, maybe it
value. You consider that players 6-7 years his juniors are not going for north
of £12 million. We aren’t signing as an investment, we are signing as a player
for now, so the fact that he will have no sell on value is neither here nor
there. We’ve profited on plenty of players lately so why not squander some
cash.
