There has been a host of comments today on the likes of Twitter from fans brandishing new signing Rafik Djebbour as a flop. This is based on the fact he hasn't scored since his debut. He has played around 3 hours of football, with 2 starts. To brandish a player new to a league, new to the culture and the language, and his team mates in short space of time to me is nothing short of downright retarded. Here is a selection of tweets about Djebbour.
@ard_22 not always
upbeat, just realistic. That Djebbour is dog shit, just like his pal Abdoun.
Rammel.

Billy Davies is tactically
inept. Poor poor substitutions. Djebbour looks like he could be the worst
player we have ever had. #nffc

Djebbour looks like the
biggest waste of money since Justin Fashanu. #nffc

I have no
reservation with anyone questioning individual performances, or that someone
wasn't playing to his best, that was apparent for all anyway. But it also
points out those with very little knowledge of the game. And to start declaring
he will be one of the clubs worst players ever? This is a bit melodramatic and
over the top isn't it? You've barely seen him play!!!
For one it
boils down to Djebbour not touching the ball, but to be honest we were in
defensive mode and there wasn't a lot of service forthcoming for Djebbour
versus Sheffield United. I think this is coupled with his slightly slow start
against Yeovil when it took a while to get the ball. But it takes time for
players to understand the new striker's mind-set, the runs he will make, how he
plays, does he want to the ball to feet? Does he play off the defenders
shoulder? Remember we knew nothing about him either, so for the fans to decide
that he's a flop already is very odd. Djebbour too needs to adapt to know how
we play.
I know reading
anything into a few fans views on Twitter is silly. You're reading into the
random ramblings of a vocal few who think if they shout loudest they speak for
all. It's the reserve of those who can't wait to shout their opinion first,
without basing it anything so they can say told you so. It's why ITK accounts prosper,
but it's also bad news for fans views.
I'm going to
make a point in this article that the same people who think its right to judge
a players entire future Forest career on 2 whole matches of game time, will
probably dismiss. That’s their prerogative. Other Forest players have had
extremely slow starts and went on to be integral, and in some cases almost
worshipped.
David Johnson
for all his heroics in the playoffs of 2003 team had been previously an utter
failure with whom we were going to take a huge loss. Here's the Wikipedia
entry, so not my words.
"After
Johnson scored just three goals in his first 24 appearances of the 2001–02
season, he fell out of favour with new manager Paul Hart,
and from February to April 2002, in order to reduce the club's heavy wage bill,[21]
he was allowed to go on loan to fellow First Division clubs Sheffield Wednesday (for whom he scored
twice in seven appearances) and Burnley
(five goals in eight appearances).Burnley had agreed to pay £120,000 to sign
Johnson on a permanent basis at the end of the season, but the transfer
ultimately fell through. Upon his return to Nottingham Forest for the 2002–03
season, Johnson appeared to have found his form again that had made him such a
success at Ipswich, scoring 29 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions as
Nottingham Forest reached the play-offs"
Similarly Stern John, although maybe not as lauded as
Johnson took a while to settle, before he found his scoring boots, and probably
could have scored more had we not been forced into selling him to avoid huge
bills due to the bizarre deal we had to sign him. (Who agrees a deal that
involves paying large extra sums when a striker scores a not entirely modest 15
goals). Indeed Stern John went on to play top flight football, we didn't.

That’s two
whole years of paltry returns before he started scoring, and he's not exactly
tagged as a flop. So for people to announce this after 4 games? It just seems
people are ready for players to fail at times, to try and be "told you
so." I don't understand this mentality at all. This readiness to be
disappointed. Rather than an excitement of the unknown. But we've all probably
had a game sat near someone moaning all the while, exclaiming "oh here we
go…" whenever the opposition attack, always seeming to think the worst.
Well it might just be those guys again. But judging players Forest career on 2
starts and 2 sub appearances is ridiculous no matter how you look at it
