believed it would take 12 years to get back to the Premier League. That said,
during that time we had looked closer to dropping to League One, especially as Fawaz
era came to a crashing end.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">It was that end that made me fall out of love with Forest a
bit. I stopped the blogging at that time, with occasionally efforts to reenergise
myself to do it that just always fell flat. I just couldn't muster the effort.
Oh that and getting married, having a child, buying a house, and work being
more intense…. Those too.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Covid as well played its part. It felt hard to connect with
such a disjointed season and with no fan presence. It also put life's
priorities in perspective.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">And of course the sheer drudgery of the Hughton period.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">But the last 3-4 months have been instrumental in dragging me
back to my passion for Forest. The love and support were always there, but the
passion that’s been reignited.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">This is no glory hunt. I was a season ticket holder from
2004 to 2017 so I sat through relegation and all three League One seasons.
Before that I was a season ticket holder from 1995 to 1999. But I essentially
walked away after Fawaz.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I was 18 when we were relegated from the Premier league.
Pretty much my entire life has been spent outside the topflight. And we were a
big deal. I lived close enough to Nottingham, but far away enough when I was
younger in Edwinstowe that most of my mates were Forest, but not everyone. That
feels like a smaller number today.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">When I moved to north Sheffield and you'd say you were a
Forest fan, especially amongst many Wednesday fans up here there was that
feeling of almost having to apologise for not supporting a good team. I've even
had locals suggest I should give Forest up for Stocksbridge Park Steels. It
feels like when you are a fan of a club outside the elite that it's something
that can be beaten out of you. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I was lucky enough to get Wembley tickets, via a friend who couldn’t
use his season ticket. It was a glorious day, as we all know and I don't need
to go into detail about it too much, as others have covered that off more than
succinctly. But it was such an outpouring of relief and heartache that we
finally would be up.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">This is more about feeling proud to be a Forest fan again.
That this team restored that passion and desire to watch and follow them. Yes,
as fans we must follow the bad times so enjoy the good, and it does feel like I'm
saying I'm only back because things are good, but that’s why this last season
was so important.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">How many fans were lost like me for a few years? How many
had stepped away?<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I see a new generation of fans able to experience the topflight.
I see a new era for the club and no longer having some kids say Forest are
their "second" team whilst also supporting Chelsea, Liverpool, or Man
City. In the same way that when we went to League One some spoke of a lost
generation of fans, (anyone 8 years at that time would be hard pressed to fall
in love with Forest) now there's a generation who won't be going elsewhere. And
that is what I think is vital for the club.<o:p></o:p></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4772983345584932747.post-54383745602064688302020-08-11T22:28:00.004+01:002020-08-11T22:28:49.191+01:00Remember Them?....Lars Veldwijk<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwGv_W6MRJcgoxoj0KKoJIGD2ZTKWj6vnkd4o8afm1mZt5YLIRMLoVE2L6x9oankcdFs-yxK7w8utVyAPC4JsPevh8kK0OA89VaAmap-TGwUlIOhz5RuasEbL63y7-m8NYh3HFhG2Arxs/s675/Screenshot+2020-08-11+at+10.11.10+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="675" data-original-width="503" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwGv_W6MRJcgoxoj0KKoJIGD2ZTKWj6vnkd4o8afm1mZt5YLIRMLoVE2L6x9oankcdFs-yxK7w8utVyAPC4JsPevh8kK0OA89VaAmap-TGwUlIOhz5RuasEbL63y7-m8NYh3HFhG2Arxs/w196-h262/Screenshot+2020-08-11+at+10.11.10+PM.png" width="196" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Veldwijk at Forest</td></tr></tbody></table><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br />Lars Veldwijk arrived at Forest to a few raised eye brows.A
name no one had even remotely heard of from the Dutch second tier after a
prolific season with Excelsior.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">At 6’5, the Dutchman was a physical presence that we lacked.
He was 23 at the time and was a little bit rough around the edges. But the
signing was elcomed by fans as being a sign we were thinking differently and
trying to snap up players from hither to unsearched markets.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">The price tag was around £500,000, but it was regarded that
he would take quite a while to settle in and get upto speed for the
Championship.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">I believe at the time I mentioned we should look to loan him
to League One or League Two to bring him upto speed with English football a
bit. Keep his eye in for goals.</p><o:p></o:p><p style="text-align: left;"></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">That wasn’t something we did. Veldwijk was slowly fed into
the team with substitute appearences. And he did look way off the pace when he
did come on.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">Anyway, a I’m sure eall know Veldwijks time with the club didn’t

Looking at mainly Leagues One and Two, but also players released, and also from other European Leavgues. In no way shapre or form am I suggesting this is Forests shopping list. These names are largely selected by looking at bigger pictures. Also these names are younger players being bought in as squad payers or to develo, not to be first teamers.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The more obvious names appear higher up the list, before we get a little more left field with choices.</p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="704" data-original-width="588" height="410" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKegSjYujeFkV0fGVrtjlsugWRVmvJ6y15O06iCErHEsSXqgtY9rSLX0FNER_nBBOjEgbu1YMeogN_7O_dm-itmftzkOuK3vOR3Obc_FIjiYXe_GIySrNJB80neRVgvaPYa2-VraYnhRY/w342-h410/Screenshot+2020-08-10+at+10.59.47+PM.png" width="342" /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Randell Williams </b></div>Exeter attacking wing back. Downes is a box to box midfielder, and with Forest having midfield options he might be an immediate target, but should we offload Carvalho, we might need a few extra bodies in there with Ben Watson likely to be leaving.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal">The following names are a bit more trying to think outside of the box.<br /><br /></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Eoin Toal </b><br />Derry City centre back - Dawson isn’t getting
younger, Worrall might be off. Hefele will be hopefully be getting jettisoned
into outer space. As cover for the defence, and relatively young and raw, The
Northern Ireland U21 centre back could be worth bringing is as cover. He would be relatively inexpensive.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Dion McGhee</b><br />Released by Man United, the midfielder is boing courted by some big European clubs in Porto and Rangers. This kind of transfer is not one Forest have often looked at snapping up free transfers released from the top flight, but they do work out. He is an attacking midfielder.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Largie Ramazani </b><br />Released by Manchester United, 19 year old Belgian forward Largie Ramazani is avilable. Reading some sites and blogs they seem to think he was quite well regarded but the emergency of Mason Greenwood has further blocked his route to United first team, leaving him to reject deals tolook for football elsewhere.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Denver Hume </b><br />We don’t need a new left back. Yuri is
perfectly good. But what was shown up is that we need cover for Yuri and Denver
Hume at Sunderland could be that. Young and enegetic and playing as wing back,
we play in<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> a </span>way that requires full backs
to get up and down the wings</p><p class="MsoNormal"><b>Jordan Lyden</b><br />A 24 year Australian midfielder, who plays presently for Swindon but came through at Aston Villa. He is a defensive midfielder, and with Sow having a poor injury record and Ben Watson potentially leaving, it leaves a spot for a young Central Midfielder to step up.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><b>Franck Bambock</b><br />A 6 foot French-Cameroonian Defensive midfielder, he presently plays in Portugal for Maritimo. appeared to have the world at his feet and left Forest for RB Leipzig, there is
a question of resigning him.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">There would be numerous problems with that before we even
touch on should we go for him. It still won’t be cheap. He cost West Brom £15
million just three years ago. Even with Premiership money they aren’t going to
just write off that figure, as he also has two years left on that contract. And
a five year deal signed in a £15 mill deal when West Brom were in the Premiership,
he is going to have high wages (the reports when he went to Leipzig saw some
eye watering figures for a untested youngsters bandied about)<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">So Burke is available. And could fit into our counter attacking
system. He knows the club, and was a popular player so could be a good fit.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We have returned for players before. If you go back beyond
my times we bought back John Robertson and Garry Birtles. More into my era,
Steve Hodge and Neil Webb both came back, Des Walker came home and more
recently so too have Andy Reid and Michael Dawson.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">However in a few of those cases its players at the end of
their career, in the twilight of their playing days coming back. Not a player
coming back in his peak years. Look across football. It doesn’t happen all that
much,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>especially in England. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You could easily argue in all of those cases
above, the player that came back was a far diminished version of the player who
left. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">And that argument of a diminished player returning would be
very much the case with a Burke return. If he were to reignite his career would
he want to stick around. I don’t think there’s a chance right now of a Premier
League team taking him on because he has simply failed to make the grade at the
top level. One of Leipzig’s criticisms was that he wasn’t an intelligent
player. But in a stable environment getting games he could turn out to be an
astute buy.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Without major outgoings I can’t see us laying out the £6-7
million I think would be necessary to bring Burke back. I can’t see the club
approving many multi million deals, especially on a player who has struggled
for a few years. Similarly an expensive buy would see a long contract, and look
at how we got lumbered with Clough for a number of years with no takers. I’m
not saying Burke is like Clough, Burke has gone places to get regular game
time, whereas Clough has wallowed.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We are also linked with Kieron Freeman who left the club as
a youngster. Unlike Burke he never really broke through at Forest. Unlike Burke
he would be relatively cost effective. He knows the city which can help.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Moving for a former player isn’t always going backwards.
Burke moved to go onto bigger things that didn’t quite pan out. So its not
quite a step backwards. A number of clubs are interested in
the midfielder turned full back. And that gives Forest a very strong bargaining
position.<o:p></o:p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje1WTvIJaRgHWfy2n_p-mmUcW9QroL78yCyvSylaEg-4cXMKDHT9aEoZ57LIIdXj5n_K-CAdBSFjBrLcLqvX2NYn8yLsCk-zowBhao0lMFP-0FPa9Exp-kjvn031QEy57sI7fpPnqZfN0/s400/cash.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="400" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje1WTvIJaRgHWfy2n_p-mmUcW9QroL78yCyvSylaEg-4cXMKDHT9aEoZ57LIIdXj5n_K-CAdBSFjBrLcLqvX2NYn8yLsCk-zowBhao0lMFP-0FPa9Exp-kjvn031QEy57sI7fpPnqZfN0/w400-h400/cash.jpg" title="Matty Cash" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Matty Cash</td></tr></tbody></table><p class="MsoNormal"></p><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The purported fee is around £15million, and I know some fans
suggest that it should be higher, but that figure is a for a player who has
never played at the highest level. It would represent the joint highest transfer
fee recouped by Forest, for a player that cost nothing.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">There is no suggestion Cash is agitating for a move from the
club, but by the same token he probably knows he doesn’t have to. The club will
likely need to sell in order to create revenue to strengthen the squad in other
places.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">It will be a huge loss to Forest, but you can’t always stand
in these players way. Whether it works out is down to Cash and where he goes.
Look at Oliver Burke who left for a big fee, and whose career has floundered,
whereas Jamaal Lascelles is arguably now a Premier League stalwart. <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">How Forest reinvest the money will be key, and we will be looking at that over the coming days.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p><br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4772983345584932747.post-17265437258691381072019-07-30T21:08:00.000+01:002019-07-30T21:08:04.240+01:00Time to reforge Links With County<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Until a few years ago we had a handy link up with Notts
County, with the likes of Grant and Yates getting valuable experience over the
Trent. Even before that we tried out inexperienced youngsters with them for a
number of years. Its an arrangement that under the disasterous spell of Alan
Hardy came to an end.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Hardy threw his toys out the pram following Yates being
recalled from his loan to loan to better club in Scunthorpe. The link was
broken and County disappeared. We loaned Mansfield the players instead and
nearly got them promoted.<o:p></o:p><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUQnhqYtqIhG2ev_nFRb_TzeLEjryFF7TY1kli7Ja_TLUN7m2MW3oIg6Rlm5iS6Yg_nsav4_hHGzPdQbh5HHJ4InDjTZz2JjCZMcR2UFbMCWWKBM15jOKBU_ZIf1cJKb9zBgmyfUJfzbw/s1600/Screenshot+2019-07-30+at+21.06.56.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="532" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUQnhqYtqIhG2ev_nFRb_TzeLEjryFF7TY1kli7Ja_TLUN7m2MW3oIg6Rlm5iS6Yg_nsav4_hHGzPdQbh5HHJ4InDjTZz2JjCZMcR2UFbMCWWKBM15jOKBU_ZIf1cJKb9zBgmyfUJfzbw/s320/Screenshot+2019-07-30+at+21.06.56.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now Hardy has gone and there are new Danish owners in town,
we can look to have relations with both Mansfield and County. As Mansfield are
league Two they can get some better players and County can get some others too.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Loans have been vital in developing a number of youngsters.
The aforementioned Yates, but also Worrall, Smith and Walker of the current
generation all went down the leagues. Toby Edser has spent time out on loan
too, and may step up. <o:p></o:p><br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It’s a step for the likes of Virgil Gomis, and a number of
others to take. Arvin Appiah may well be taking on more of a first team role or
seek a League One loan. <o:p></o:p><br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Some of the fringe players frozen out like Cummings and
Clough would be unlikely to be affordable for these clubs, but if a deal to
take one to Mansfield could be made it could put them in the shop window.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The problem that often happens with County and new owners,
and they’ve had more than even us in the last few years, is that the new ones
always come in with brash ideas, as any do. With County they immediately look
over the Trent and make bold promises and making County bigger than Forest. The
new guys don’t appear to have done that, which would be refreshing if they
remain relatively humble.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So its time to extend the Olive branch and see if some of
the Kids might be alright over the river.<o:p></o:p><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">I say afar, more like half way between <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.1" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Barnsley</span></span> and
Sheffield, but far away enough to be removed from water cooler conversations at
work and to not be at games. (I know people travel to every game from further
away - cry me a river)<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">I have been silent most of this
season (and last). I lost the love for a while. I really did. I just <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.2" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">couldn’t</span></span> be
bothered with Forest. And then around Christmas just as I was getting the love
back, we changed manager again and I sort just thought, oh well, here we go
again. I just felt distant.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">But the last few weeks seeing
the ridiculous arguments from some fans that seem to have <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.3" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">ridiculous</span></span> expectations
or are just fishing for attention (any <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.4" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">attention</span></span>, even people telling them they are
twats) I have sort of been dragged in in a need to level the argument somewhat.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">There is a lot of soul
searching for Forest fans, anyone under the age of 25 won’t have seen us play a
Premier League game in the flesh, and even then, it was probably one we lost. A
generation devoid of success.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">Now they want success. Now this
is a <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.5" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">point</span></span> I
have <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.6" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">banged</span></span> on
about before, an even dating to the days we had a forum attached to this site
(RIP Soccer 24-7 - you'd have been 17 years old this year) where I complained
that younger fans hungry for success want the club to mortgage its future to
win something. We had a kid on the forum then, I forget who, and he basically
wanted the club to spend, spend, spend and <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.7" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">didn</span></span>’t care if we did
a Portsmouth because at least he'd get to cheer winning something. At <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.8" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">the</span></span> time we all
shouted him down and called him a moron. Portsmouth were slumping down the
leagues in danger of going out of business for one FA Cup. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">But was he right? Because in
those year in between we have gone <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.9" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">nowhere</span></span>. We did splash the cash, and then we stopped.
We nearly did jeopardise our future (anyone saying clubs always find a new
owner - they don’t) but we survived. So we sort of did a half-way house. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">So when am I going to get to
this season? Well here we go. This season will finish with us likely missing
the playoffs again. <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.10" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Ok</span></span>. Not what we wanted or set out for. Is that
failure? Well you could say yes, and you definitely point to sacking <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.11" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Karanka</span></span> (was
he sacked? Did he walk? Pushed?) Those actions <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.12" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">speak</span></span> of a club
trying to save a season. We spent a lot of money on the likes of <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.13" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Carvalho</span></span>, <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.14" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Grabban</span></span> etc.
But consider that <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.15" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Carvalho</span></span> is
a valuable asset that we could sell (and if <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.16" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">FFP</span></span> came
looming I imagine <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.17" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Olympiacos</span></span> may
well take us off his hands for a surprising sum of cash) We didn't go full on <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.18" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">gung</span></span> ho
as we could, but the wage bill won't be light.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">With that in mind then surely
yes we have failed to achieve success. Sheffield United are far out performing
us having spent a fraction with an ex player spearheading their promotion bid.
Other clubs who also were more frugal are doing better. But other big spenders
are messing up too. It's a bloody hard competitive division. We tried to do a
bit of a Wolves with the <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.19" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Portuguese</span></span> lads, and well Dias was not a
success, <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.20" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Domingues</span></span>...
yeah well him neither but <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.21" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Carvalho</span></span> is a player on his day can win
games.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">But when you look at the size
of other clubs and other budgets we are probably par for the course. Stoke and
West <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.22" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Brom</span></span> came
down with premiership budgets. Other clubs are like us, similar size grounds,
traditional top flight clubs when 24 teams were up there and <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.23" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">petro</span></span>-dollars
didn't dictate business, Norwich, Sheffield Wednesday, even Derby. All clubs
whose home in the 80's and early 90's was the top flight. So is that our level?
Are we doing <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.24" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">ok</span></span>?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">Well yes, it is our level,
except we've won the League; we've won in Europe, which makes us that little
bit more special. It means nothing NOW< but in the context of history, it
means a lot. We did it. You lot, apart from the mega rich, you haven't. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.26" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1"><span style="background: yellow; color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">Karanka</span></span><span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;"> bonded with many fans, but there was always an undercurrent
of fans that weren't happy. You know the ones, they are NEVER happy. They
always want the manager out. They always say we should be better. But <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.28" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Karanka</span></span> ultimately
was always going to end up leaving. If he succeeded he would have used as a
stepping stone. If we failed, he’s the next name <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.29" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">in a</span></span> very long
line of managers to fail.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">Managers who led us to failure.
So many names. We've spent 20 years changing manager every 9-10 months. And it
has got us nowhere. We are where we were when <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.30" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Platt</span></span> took
over and started this huge spell without top flight football, via a patch in
league One I think we all tend to forget ever existed now. In that time we've
had splurges. We spent under <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.31" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Platt</span></span>, we spent big for League One when down
there, even under Davies despite his protestations we splurged, and then under <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.32" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Fawaz</span></span>. And we
are exactly where we were. A team in the second tier who once won the European
Cup before most fans were born.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;">That is why we fail. A lack of
trust in a manager through the bad times. Don’t get me wrong, not all of them
needed trust when it got bad. <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.33" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Megson</span></span> and <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.34" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Kinnear</span></span> definitely

had a few years at the Blades and has them clicking. Lee Johnson has had a

It didn't work. <span style="background: yellow;"><span aria-haspopup="true" id=":df.48" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Platt</span></span>,

now O'Neill. That's not even all the names who took temporary charge too. That
kind of turnover creates instability and that's why we are where we are.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br />
Yes for the first time in what feels like a while I've fe;t that urge to write again. I used to blog so often, but the last days of Fawaz killed my enthusiasm. It just wasnt fun writing "everythings fucked" repeatedly.<br />
<br />
I've gave up my season ticket a couple of seasons ago. That was mainly because of life, but the repeateded moving of fictures to midweek, with commuting back upto Yorkshire was just too tiring. Mortgages quickly swallow up that money.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I try to keep as up to date as one, without actually being there every week.<br />
<br />
So how can I write about the club if I'm not actually there. well f course I get regualr updates from those who do. I still know plenty of season ticket holders. That and Twitter. Ahhhh Twitter, for so long it was a great tool, and then it got inundated with dickheads who seem to value saying something daft and getting attention ahead of actual reasoned debate.<br />
<br />
So I intend to keep trying to dip my toes into this again. (I am still paying for the URL afterall)<br />
<br />
At the end of the day, as a fan sitting on the fringes these days, Forest appears to take on a soap opera style entertainment. The ins and outs of the team. Managerial merry go rounds (I'm not sure who was the manager when I last wrote), recriminations between fans, it's all rather ridiculous.<br />
<br />
But I intend to at least get some thoughts down.<br />
<br />
And if anyone fancies writing anything - completely unpaid of course then feel free to drop me a line on Social media. I rejigged my Twitter from the blog account to my own personal one these days, but hey ho, you'll suss out who I am.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4772983345584932747.post-38822761454970584752017-09-14T12:47:00.001+01:002017-09-14T12:47:12.975+01:00Progress Report: 14/09/2017<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">I started
writing a piece before the Sheffield Wednesday game on Saturday about parallels
with last season. I nearly revisited it on Monday to further point them out,
but last night’s win at Sunderland has sort of blown this apart.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">The
excitement many had before the Leeds game was understandable with good form
following such a poor season the one before. But it forgets that we had a
similar bright start last season under Montanier. We had 3 wins out of 5 before
the international break, and felt good. It was then after the break (and also
crucially in part of what I was saying a visit to Sheffield Wednesday with a
defeat.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">Crucial
differences are though we have already won away and more than once, which took
so long last season. Getting an early away win gets that hoodoo off the back.
We even drew against Rotherham away last year; such was our inability to close
out away games. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">We aren’t
laden with unknown quantities. I was speaking to my friend at the Wednesday
match last year when we bought on Dumitru saying “I’m just not sure what his
game is meant to be… is he pacey? IS he skilful? Is he powerful?” (Turns out
none of the above) and the same was with Lica. Lam and Kasami were largely
unknown, Stojkovic was new to England. This year we know our players more, we
know what their games are, their strengths. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">The two
recent defeats were against a team in Sheffield Wednesday who has been a
fixture in the playoffs for the last few years and have invested heavily over
the last few years. and in Leeds who are flying high. There’s no shame in some
of these results. There is little point in reading too much into league
position till 12 game sin. In 12 games you should have had a mix of good teams
and bad teams. Before that is too soon.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">But
expectation is crazy again. We missed relegation last season by a whisker. Yet
there are some who seem to think we are world beaters. I’ve seen numerous
people suggest changing manager on Facebook in the comments sections of Forest
updates. Who they think we’d get or who would be better, that’s something they
never feel the need to qualify or expand on. It’s like they haven’t seen the
last decade or so, and especially the Fawaz regime, that chopping and changing
creates a mess. Fawaz especially created problems by always changing the
manager, but it’s now created a norm for fans where if a few games don’t go
perfectly they feel justified in calling for manager’s heads. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">The players
fans are getting on the back of are young experience players who will grow, rather
than battle hardened veterans. I think abusing a young player is stupid. It affects
their confidence so much, not that attacking any player in the cowards way on
twitter, hurling abuse whilst knowing that the other party can’t really do
anything to retaliate is ridiculous. But to young players is particularly bad.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">I’ve spoke
before at length about the abuse Ben Osborn gets. That is frankly retarded. It just
feels like idiots online like to band together as it makes their odd views feel
legitimized. Before hand in the stands they’d get shouted down. Now online they
find others who agree.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">The win last
night means that in the binary world of the Twitter Forest fan everything is
good again. The old adage you are only as good as your last result is never
more prevalent than amongst the online community, who seem to react to each
result with increasingly polar opposite reactions. A defeat means certain
relegation. A win means the playoffs are a certainty. It’s like they forget the
ebb and flow of a 46 game long season.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">We are in 8th. That is better than
par. I’d expect us to be mid table come the end of the season, and the longer
we remain above that, the better. Young players will learn, and develop, and
become better players. To get on Worrall’s back or Brereton’s as I have seen is
not helpful. Those who consider themselves the free thinking rebels online, and
I’ve seen them attack all other fans as sheep following a herd, so it’s a fair
label, say that its fair play to get on players backs. That they only reason
they are immune from abuse is that they are academy graduates. That’s far too
simple. It’s that they are young players, and we have seen all too many
flourishing carers rocked by confidence issues, not helped by the crowd.</span><span style="font-size: 8pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

In the first case there really wasn't much to look at, and although thats kind of still the case after 7 games, there is still patterns beginning to emerge.<br />
<br />
So lets looks first at the players used and the minutes played. As always when we say minutes played we have taken that as including injury time and not cutting it off at 90 mins. That also includes the extra time versus Newcastle in the League Cup.<br />
<br />
This first chart shows the minutes played broken down into which competition. It is ordered by squad number. 9-10 players are immediately apparent to have played more minutes than the others. And some players are clearly only being used thus far in the League Cup.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9Fu13NsWFqvaDPPvdTyjnPz9dj4gpgd7zy2F46xrkwUp-Hk8V4JoBF3bv-sVBFwM3iCKYRXRm-nw2dqAeugKJzk7SU-c0PIcNDZbiK6ydXbZC1WoNvJu0f292-D1_NDQz_9qYHMXK4LU/s1600/Cum+MIns+Played.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="388" data-original-width="967" height="128" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9Fu13NsWFqvaDPPvdTyjnPz9dj4gpgd7zy2F46xrkwUp-Hk8V4JoBF3bv-sVBFwM3iCKYRXRm-nw2dqAeugKJzk7SU-c0PIcNDZbiK6ydXbZC1WoNvJu0f292-D1_NDQz_9qYHMXK4LU/s320/Cum+MIns+Played.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Here are the % of League mins played by each player, again ordered by squad number. Smith, Worrall and Darikwa are the most featured players, with large numbers for Murphy, Osborn and McKay.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Next up we have % of the League minutes played by the players, again ordered by squad number. Some players like Lichaj and Cummings are barely featuring in the Championship, as so far we have had good league form till the Leeds game. We may start to look at different players now after the international break against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. Darikwa, Worrall, these are players featuring heavily.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQH1PW3VkNzPQ541DAtzVXD86k46dWAhN_n7qf89tRof7QEU9anThpHdCgOg-aLCnzVlOdTosHpvJocD8DqgVz24vQLe4iBCn_ag_mI20s-lfuqTICo4cNyEHSnfchTho6ovKFWg-8IXw/s1600/%2525+League+mins+played.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="372" data-original-width="968" height="122" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQH1PW3VkNzPQ541DAtzVXD86k46dWAhN_n7qf89tRof7QEU9anThpHdCgOg-aLCnzVlOdTosHpvJocD8DqgVz24vQLe4iBCn_ag_mI20s-lfuqTICo4cNyEHSnfchTho6ovKFWg-8IXw/s320/%2525+League+mins+played.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is where things get a little more complex, but where patterns can be seen to emerge, especially surrounding team selection. The chart is ordered by the sum % of the total mins played, in the blue marker, plotted against the average mins played. The average mins played will show up who is being subbed, or used a sub in games. It also shows where some players haven't started many games. The likes of Bridcutt and Evtimov haven't played many games, but when they play, they turn out the full game.<br />
<br />
The table below the chart also shows the same thing but not in graphical format.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIz3a3IeBa6pn9KoWXWwsWJVTArpIIPnHk4sSHJFAgt0mAjbVQQw_4nR8-kzDgCinnMHiLYY3sIPVE9iAbl18EW9BmOuK5GaEM0kN5D1-Ch6E2_-9_sQw8a7NldilEdo5XgXqWnYnlHXY/s1600/avg+mins+vs+%2525+mins.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="382" data-original-width="792" height="154" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIz3a3IeBa6pn9KoWXWwsWJVTArpIIPnHk4sSHJFAgt0mAjbVQQw_4nR8-kzDgCinnMHiLYY3sIPVE9iAbl18EW9BmOuK5GaEM0kN5D1-Ch6E2_-9_sQw8a7NldilEdo5XgXqWnYnlHXY/s320/avg+mins+vs+%2525+mins.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Next up is a feature on which players are the 'winners'. Basically these are the players ordered by the percentage of matches they have played they have won. Ok, so those guys top haven;t played in a lot of games, but thats still a case that they have played only in wins. These are largely the players who played in the League Cup. No whats odd is that Cummings has the lowest win percentage, but thats because he's been used in the league as plan B, when we have been losing in games<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Next up is the mins played per goal scored. Again this data gets skewed by the players who may have played less. Like Dowell has featured a lot, but only scored less goals. Walker however has scored and not featured much so his mins played per goal are skewed low. Murphy scoring at nearly every other game is quite a good ratio for a striker still bedding in to the team.<br />

updates as we see them during the day.<o:p></o:p></div>

Jota is off to Birmingham for £6mill and a range of fans thing we should make a
bid, despite strikers not really being a huge priority. Neither can I see us
paying that much. Similarly people saying Dwight Gayle seen in Nottingham.
Newcastle slapped a £20mill price tag on his head. Not happening. <br />
John McGinn at Hibs is still a strong link, having two offers rebuffed. The
midfielder has been linked all week, with Hibs desperate to hold on to him. Forest
may well go in hard for him if Warburton really wants him.<br />
Fredrik Ronnow, the deal looked dead, but there were suggestions of forums of
maybe one last try to get the keeper. If we don’t Everton<span style="font-family: "bell mt" , "serif";">s</span> Joel Robles is the second choice.

And so Tim Krul is the name doing the rounds on Twitter as a potential move.
Krul is down the pecking order at Newcastle and would look for a move as an
outside chance of the Dutch World Cup squad (if they qualify). <br />
Joe Worrall is being linked with a move to West Brom. Feels a little bit made
up, but one or more believable sites are mentioning it. That depends on Jonny
Evans leaving, but Worrall would be a very rough replacement for an
International with top level experience.<br />
Lica has left. A book of condolence will be open at the City Ground for fans to

Well this is rumoured to be all done but the announcement of
the deal depending on who you pay attention to. One rumour is that any delay is
that Leeds don’t want him to play against them next week and that most other
details are sorted. I feel that feels odd as it gives a week to be gazumped,
unless it is all signed. Bridcutt is that big strong midfielder we need and
have missed for a while. Moussi with a brain. Now at Leeds, he started at Chelsea,
and after several loans got his big break at Brighton.<o:p></o:p></div>

Danish goalkeeper, who is 25 years old. He plays for Danish side Brondby, who
would apparently seek a deal of £2.5 mill. He is 6’3, and has 5 Danish caps.
The fact we are linked with other keeps suggests the Federici deal is dead. 25
is fairly young for a keeper, and it also suggests Warburton feels Henderson
and Evtimov are not capable competition for Jordan Smith. It’s an interesting
name to be linked with.<o:p></o:p></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Danny Fox</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">There is a strong culture amongst some Forest fans to deliberately dislike players. A friend of mine we also jokes always has a player he really dislikes, someone in the squad will get his ire, but it’s always with a touch of humour. There are those on social media with active dislike of certain players, and it hardly fosters great relations when these “fans“ are openly attacking these players directly to them on Twitter and suchlike.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Yesterday before the game had barely got going I noticed the dislike pouring out of some fans for Danny Fox. Now I have been often fairly critical myself, but fairly and when something bad happens. I will also admit that may times Fox last season made me eat my words. Now I wasn’t there last night, so I can’t comment first-hand about Fix performance, but he was booked earlier on and got pulled during the game. Indicative enough of a Central Defender or any defender not playing well. I had a fan sat behind me once moaning all game about Fix being on a salary that wouldn’t be even close to whatever Fox is paid, for what difference it would make. All game “He’s on £40k!, £40k!”. I mean he wasn’t but the very fact people are so ready to believe the worst about some players speaks volumes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Late last season I found myself defending Ben Osborn on Twitter against a number of people who proclaimed he’s the worst player in the side. To be fair I wasn’t alone. Also to be fair those people berating him seemed to be incredibly stupid.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I have found over the years that there is a strong culture of hate on players. Many seem incredibly quick to judge players within 2 minutes. Whether it is some kind of one-upmanship of trying to call their talent first, or just people really do think that 20 minutes as a sub is an indicator of ability.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Eric Lichaj was voted player of the season last season. And yet as we signed Darikwa a few fans felt moved to direct abuse and mocking towards Lichajs wife on Twitter, mainly because Eric himself was with the USA squad at the Gold Cup. But this is a guy who can never ever be doubted gives his all for the side, with fans attacking his wife. It hardly makes these players stay.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">But are these just trolls online, desperate to get attention by attacking players. Not always, many of the players I’ve seen blindly hated were never on social media, or in the days before Twitter. Paul McKenna was a huge example of this, and we will discuss McKenna below. He hasn’t been alone though. Some players just seem to rub some fans the wrong way and yes when there are bad performances I get it. The lies of Arron Davies or David McGoldrick who just didn’t settle, or ever seem to try. Paul Smith came in for an unfair amount of abuse I felt in his time in goal, and I have spoken before about the 2-3 year spectrum of emotions for Forest keepers, Darlow trod this path too. But it seems there is a seed, something tiny that some latch on to and then the damage is done.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Paul McKenna</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Paul McKenna used to get some crazy abuse and poor treatment. Fans berating his ability yet it was obvious without him in the side we just didn’t tick. He was the fulcrum for the midfield and the screen for the defence. Excuse me for potentially sounding rude, as I base this on those who sat near me, but the people who hated McKenna were by and large knuckle dragging idiots. They didn’t get or understand a player whose role was subtle. In those days we had the forum, and several members always moaned about him, whilst then also wanted the central midfield to be McGugan and Majewski, so I think it underlines their lack of understanding, and complete blinkered view that all midfielders have to be creative flair players.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Lansbury was a similar player who divides opinion. For every person claiming he’s useless though, are those who understand that there is subtleness. His inconsistency is down to different roles he’s being asked to play. Occasionally to drop deeper and play as a Quarter back role, or to play further forward. It leads to a player than fans can’t understand why his game changes. It’s down to his instructions.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">So we get to Osborn, and the abuse he got, because it was easy. A midfielder who hadn’t scored. He must be rubbish. But he had offered more, with assists, with energy. Osborn may not be best on the wing, but when there he tracks back, other flashier wingers may not. At the same time last season these people were raving about Perreira. Now don’t get me wrong he is a talented exciting player, but that doesn’t encompass his whole game. Whether that be his plethora of cards, or the fact that defending in his world seems to be optional, and not his actual job. Yet whilst berating Osborn, they raved about Perriera. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">To be berating Osborn is madness. The guy created more scoring chances than the rest of the squad and was amongst the very top in the division. Osborn just again seems to be a player some don’t get, but I think it’s the lack of flair. The kind of fan disliking Osborn are all about the individual. The kind of fan bought up in the era where the team isn’t celebrated but the very best players, and the players who gain attention are the skilful players. I will be doing a more in depth piece about Osborn shortly, as this article hopefully leads into a wider view about players and fans perceptions. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I’m not saying we have to be nicey nicey to all players. But the fact that some people are on players backs before a ball is kicked in a game is ridiculous. Get behind them in games. And don’t go out the way on Social media to give them abuse. They are still our players. We still need to rely on them. Unless they are Dumitru. He was pointless.</span><br />

<br />
I Say intention as I have tried for the last 2 years to do this, and just fell too far behind in updating the figures. Plus when we are losing the enthusiasm for picking apart patterns has no interest to me. A plan to update the stats on the stats page every Sunday and then post some interesting one off or headline stats in individual articles on here.<br />
<br />
Theres not a lot to show for now. We have 14 players have been used and 8 of those have of course played the full mins, which was 98 mins v Millwall.<br />
<br />

This shows the percentage of League Mins played by our players<br />

This illustrates a combination of both the percentage of mins played by the averages mins played per match. This is also the theme of the graph below.<br />
<br />

As we say, theres not a lot to judge by the stats yet from one game. As we play more, ore analysis will be done. But for now, thats all there is to see.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4772983345584932747.post-45680860390768455142017-08-03T22:40:00.003+01:002017-08-03T22:40:40.523+01:00New Players in Focus: Kieran Dowell<div class="MsoNormal">

At 34 and at £2million probably not, but what is value for money
these days. He has bags of experience and offers an aerial threat. His wages won’t
have been cheap, but the fact he came here instead of another options speak
volumes of his hunger to play, and that drive is invaluable. If you consider
that it seems £2million gets you a season a top Championship striker, maybe it
value. You consider that players 6-7 years his juniors are not going for north
of £12 million. We aren’t signing as an investment, we are signing as a player
for now, so the fact that he will have no sell on value is neither here nor
there. We’ve profited on plenty of players lately so why not squander some
cash.<o:p></o:p></div>

<b>In Summary</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><br /></b>
it’s a good fit. He thrived at Ipswich, and arguably they are a similar club to
us these days. We needed a new striker and we got a good quality experienced
player for the younger strikers to learn from. He can only help Cummins, Walker
and Brereton realise their potential. Yes in stature he is similar to Vellios,
but Vellios is also a strong skilful player. Murphy will lead the line whereas Vellios
brings others into play. He might prove to not net as many goals as we’d hope,
but there’s so many other goal scoring options we didn’t have last season. I
think we will see more good than bad from Murphy, but at 34 there’s always the
risk of niggles becoming longer term delays. Murphy says he’s never felt fitter
so maybe that’s not an issue, and players look after themselves these days.<o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">22 year old Scottish international Barrie McKay was signed for Forest in July by Mark Warbuton who managed him in Scotland at Rangers. Barrie, born in Paisley,</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Barrie McKay unveiled at Forest</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> is a creative type player, who helped Rangers back up to the Scottish premier League. he signed for Rangers as a lad, and had loan spells at Greenock Morton and Raith Rovers. With close to 150 career appearances at his age, he has enough experience to be treated as a senior player and yet has time on his side. He left Rangers under a cloud with his contract due to expire next season, Rangers cashed in whilst they could. Barrie had been frozen out by their new manage Pedro Caixinha, and had been asked to train with the U-20 team. Often criticised for being more about the more glamour side of the game rather than hard graft, McKay has come to Forest for £500k.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">He has of course spoke of his delight for signing of a club like ours, which of course all new signings do, but I think Warburton has been such a positive influence on his career so far that it was the deciding factor for Barrie.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>What do Rangers fans think to his departure?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Its mixed, but then my experience of Rangers fans is that of very bitter individuals. The majority all say something of the "good riddance" variety, but with them the moment you even hint you want to leave then the fans will turn.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In terms of negative</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> A comment on the Herald Scotland website read<br /><span style="background-color: white; color: #292b2c;"><i>"What is your answer (tripe) to the fact that the lazy poser turned down a new contract. He forgets to mention that in his attack on Rangers. Well rid of someone who is another wasted talent and was more concerned about how his hair looked than actually doing some work on the field."</i></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #292b2c;"><i><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></i></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #292b2c;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">And a forum comment read</span></span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #272a34;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>"So why didn't he sign the contract he was offered? That had fuck all to do with Pedro. He didn't want to play for us - he wanted a significantly improved contract, despite doing fuck all to warrant it. And he called the club's bluff by going to the press about it. </i></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #272a34;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>McKay wasn't being treated unfairly, and his comments just reinforce that he's got a sense of entitlement that his career performances don't warrant. "</i></span></div>

<i><span style="font-family: inherit;">"Talent was there, for whatever reason he never produced it anywhere near enough to warrant staying at Ibrox, that and the fact he is a total coward on the pitch, any game he got clattered early on he hid like fuck and wasn't interested. "</span></i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #272a34;">

<span style="font-family: inherit;">On a positive front</span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #292b2c;"><i><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></i></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #292b2c;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">From a Rangers forum however was this</span></span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #272a34;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>"Good player, who we signed at a young age and developed, still wanted to play for us but got treated like a bit of shite off our current manager so Dalcio could get a game over him</i></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #272a34;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>Just let that sink in</i></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #272a34;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>This along with many other things, the main one being the Progres result, should signal the end for Caixinha here, he's clueless"</i></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #272a34;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #272a34;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>"Actually agree with most of that, I said over a year ago that if McKay had the heart of Wee Willie Henderson he has the potential to be one of the best forwards in Europe, sadly nobody can instill that spirit in a player, it has to come from within. I am also not sure, and said so during the McCostalot reign if stuck out on the wing is actually his best position. Hopefully Pedro can better motivate him, even if it is only to sell him on and make some dosh."</i></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #272a34;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #272a34;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">And from the Herald Scotland again<br /><span style="color: #292b2c;"><i>"Sorry to see Barry go. I think there is some real talent there, and properly managed has the potential to be a cracking player"</i></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>The managers view</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I am struggling to find some direct quotes from Warburton about McKay. But lets face it, he managed him at rangers, and his best periods last season were when Warburton used him. So clearly the boss knows him well and how to best utilise him.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Value for Money?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">All you have to see is what Rangers fans were saying should be the price. In the multiple millions. We got him for a knock down £500k. What we have seen thus far is that he is a creative spark that is much needed between midfield and attack. He clearly is ambitious and I have no doubt he has half an eye on using us a stepping stone to a bigger club, but in that mean time we get a young hungry player who wants to improve. If we make a massive profit, great, if we get a player playing well to prove a point, great. We know what we are getting in character from the way he has left Rangers. Sometimes for a club of our size we did have to accept being a stepping stone in young players careers. But that means they won't sit and dwell on their wages like an older player might.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">We have already seen as I say that McKay is a spark in midfield. He will vastly improve the squad, as we haven't had a player of his ilk for a while.He was linked with a big money move to Leipzig last season, so there's obviously a talented and coveted player in there.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>In Summary</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">We have a potential gem, and signing of the season in McKay. He left Rangers as he wanted chances in the team and the new boss didn't much fancy him. Its Rangers loss and our gain. There is the worry from what Rangers fans said he was a cowardly player avoiding tackles, but I don;t watch Scottish football as I;m not insane so can;t comment on the relatively physicality of the game up there. It depends what is expected and whats needed. We've had attacking players without a hint of tackling ability before and McGugan and Majewski were well liked by many fans.I think most of the comments are sour comments from bitter fans, and as I said, Rangers fans in my experience are extremely bitter.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">McKay for m is the signing that excites me the most this pre season.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">So this is the main strongest rumour doing the rounds at the moment. Their
manager Jokanovic does not want to sell, but the club looks like being open to
the right offer. What that offer is open to guesswork, with any amount up to £6
million being mentioned. Midfield is the priority, and McDonald has been a
strong player for a while. At 28 though time is not on his side. In his
position we could get several top years out of him, but it does feel a lot to
pay for someone about to turn 29 in the Championship. He would fill that gap in
the midfield, and with the Assomba-wonga still burning a hole in our pockets it’s
possible.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

signed for Arsenal from Hednesford Town, and the 20 year is highly regarded at
Arsenal. A loan could be a perfect move, and one where he might not be expected
to play all the time. That said if Arsenal see him so highly then they will
surely demand more than being a part time left back. With several senior left

<span style="font-family: inherit;">The Greek central midfielder recently signed a three year deal on a free transfer from Olympiakos, which is also the parent club owed by Evangelos Marinakis. He was initially on trial, and impressed enough to be given a permanent deal after most speculation thought it would be a loan. What we know is what we have seen pretty much, as Bouchalakis didn’t start a lot of games for Olympiakos.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

He isn’t like Djebbour or Abdoun, sitting in the reserves on huge wages. Even Kasami would have had big wages, so to compare him to those guys isn’t fair. He comes here with a very low profile and will be a complete unknown in the Championship. <div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">He has impressed in preseason and for a free transfer it is relatively low risk. A number of fans have expressed the view that all previous signings from Olympiakos have been underwhelming, but the difference were that those guys were established internationals coming for big wages. Bouchalakis will be relatively cheap on wages. I do get the concerns, he wasn’t exactly a first team regular and the Greek Super league isn’t the strongest League around, but as I say, it’s a low risk deal. 3 year deal is meaningless, and as for people complaining its costing us it’s the same bloke ultimately paying his wages.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">If he blooms it’s a great success. Otherwise Marinakis can move players around again for free transfers. There is clearly a desire for some Greek players to come over, but we aren’t forking out huge wages, and there’s no suggestion that Marinakis would demand that they play in the team.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Bouchalakis has a lot to prove that he isn’t a token signing by Marinakis. But so far he seems to be switched on and eager to impress.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

strongest can be improved then we should look to do that. Lichaj would be a
very capable back up, or even utilised as left back. With Tendayi being a
Nottingham lad its always nce to have that local connection, he knows what the
clubs all about. Having a core of local lads is always going to be a bonus, and
the fans feel more connected to “one of their own.” Warburton from the get go

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background: #F9F9F7;">
The Post interviewed Warburton about Cummings after we clinched his signing.<br />
</span><span style="color: #141414;">"But
he wants to prove himself in the Championship. We are delighted with his desire
and determination to prove himself. He has come here to play football, it is as
simple as that… I do not have any qualms about him coming here and doing well.
He is a goal scorer and a young player. We can work closely with him to help
him improve in a number of areas."</span></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: 17.25pt; margin-left: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-top: 0cm; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #141414;">Warburton also said "Jason can improve on and off the pitch but he does have that desire to do well, which is so, so important… You can see already what his attitude is like, from the demands we have put upon him in training…This is a tough place in the squad. He has come here without knowing anyone and it is interesting to watch how a young man copes with that.”</span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: 17.25pt; margin-left: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-top: 0cm; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #141414;">I think that Warburton definitely see's him as a project to nurture. He know's what he's getting and likes that he is ambitious. The fact he spoke about Cummings knowing he won;t be first choice straight away but wants to break into that role is vital</span></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: 17.25pt; margin-left: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-top: 0cm; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #141414;"><b>Value for Money</b></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: 17.25pt; margin-left: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-top: 0cm; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #141414;">The deal is supposedly around £750k, though slightly different figures were bandied around. Scottish football isn't awash with cash so there is value for money there if the player is right.</span></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: 17.25pt; margin-left: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-top: 0cm; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #141414;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Some compared to it the Veldwijk signing. I think unlike the Veldwijk deal, the signing isn’t seen as
risky, as a complete unpolished gem. Veldwijk never made the step up, and he
scored prolifically in a second division of a fringe quality European league.
For one there is no culture shock element. Scottish football is similar to
English.</span></span></div>

<b>In Summary</b></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: 17.25pt; margin-left: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-top: 0cm; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #141414;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">All in all Cummings won’t be first choice this season. Murphy
will be ahead in the pecking order, and Brereton will continue to develop.
Vellios has been on fire. But Cummings is another important option. And having
options is extremely important. Time is on his side. He knows where the goal
is. And though some Hibs fans suggested he’s not a team player that feels like
an Assombalonga type replacement. In fact he’s a very similar shape. To truly
compare though is wrong. Cummings needs time to adapt. Perhaps be an impact sub
for a while. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: 17.25pt; margin-left: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-top: 0cm; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #141414;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Cummings himself has said He said: “Forest are a massive club
and this is a great opportunity…But I’m not coming here to just walk into the team.
I have come here to learn as I will be playing with, and against, a lot better
players. I’m still at the learning stages and, with the gaffer here, I will
only get better.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

This is the every present annual debate. What do we read
into pre-season friendlies? Clubs are so quick to mock other clubs for losing embarrassingly
to some minnow, no matter how many changes or young players were used.<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We have had a successful preseason so far. In the old days
we’d go on tour of Sweden or suchlike playing Swedish lower league teams and
beating them 14-0, whereas at least these games seem somewhat competitive.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We’ve not had any huge embarrassments. Like when Alfreton beat
Sheffield Wednesday 14-0 6back in 2011. But we have only beaten two League Two
teams by modest score lines. We beat Girona, who are admittedly a La Liga side.
The game against Burnley tomorrow will be quite telling.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The last time we made the playoffs we had an awful pre-season.
We lost to Tranmere, Peterborough, Kidderminster, Lyon and Swindon. It
genuinely does not translate to form in the League. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The season before when we finished third we failed to beat
Notts County and Rushden and Diamonds, yet beat Sporting and Birmingham.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It is a chance for players to have built an understanding.
Playing well is no bad thing as players will gain form. The midfield understands
the attackers move, the goalkeeper builds an understanding with defence. The
defenders get to know each other’s game. Training can only do this so much. So if we are melding already, surely that bodes well?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Last year we had similar results, losing to Hull in our
final preseason game. So should we narrowly lose to Burnley, no matter all the
good feeling would that then mean that we could read that we will have a
similar season?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Well no not all, there’s a multitude of reasons why things
will be different. Of course a different manager who will not decide to change
the team every game. Also hopefully we won’t sell off an Oliver Burke on the
eve of the season. The club was in such turmoil with protracted take overs
being on-off which could have influenced player’s emotion.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This is a chance for players to learn each others game,
build fitness, and find some form. Winning is a bonus, it’s not a necessity.<o:p></o:p></div>

We received a huge sum of cash a week or so ago, and what’s
quite refreshing to see is that the recruitment going on since hasn’t been a
panic, and utilising that cash by paying over the odds.<o:p></o:p></div>

Many have said that the fee for Murphy, for a player of 33
is too high. But the market is what it is. </div>

Strikers get big fees. In that world
you are essentially paying £2mill for a season for strikers if you see what age
they go for and what price people pay. So even if Murphy only does the business for a
season or so, then that’s as good value as you can see. You may talk of sell on
value, but there is no guarantee of any sell on value for any player. Assombalonga
half a year ago was considered a spent force and we’d have snapped that figure
off, so you always one injury from value being obliterated.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Warburton seems to have a plan for recruitment. A plan that
was lacking last season as the club seemed to utilise agents hawking their
players at us, rather than judging the players they want, not who are offered.
The signings of Dumitru, Perquis, Pereira and Stojkovic smack of agents being
closely associated with clubs.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The current recruitment drive has seen two young Scottish
players signed for relatively modest fees. Bouchalakis is relatively risk free,
as he’s from our owners other club. Murphy could be the Glenn Murray type
signing that works out at this level so often. Experienced strikers often
thrive in this division. Now we have another right back, so that gives strength
in depth to another position. Some say it spells the end for Lichaj, but its
competition, which can only be healthy. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We haven’t secured a senior left back yet, but surely that’s
on the shopping list, and we seem to have waited and not decided to pay over
the odds for the new central midfielder we are chasing. Whether that is Irvine
or Gardner, we haven’t rushed in just spent a huge sum to get the man.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The club is being well run. And that’s off the pitch too.
The ground is being tidied up and given a bit of spit and polish. That same
thought out recruitment seems to have happened off the pitch in the boardroom
and in the boot room.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

And we are setting up good connections for getting our

Mark Warburton has been recently quoted as saying there are
around 3 players the club are in for, and that they are all attached to clubs.
Rumours have been rife that Director of Football Frank McParland has been in Belgium
last week, so there are a few Belgian based names below.<o:p></o:p></div>

<b>Jason Lowe</b><br />
The former Blackburn captain has been strongly linked. The kind of player are
screaming out for, a screening midfielder. Bolton are also linked, and HITC (I
know, I know, they publish any old bollocks as gospel) have suggested it’s a straight
up battle for former England u-21 International. Lowe came through Blackburn’s
youth system and has played over 150 games for the club, but following their
relegation he is available. It seems a very possible rumour. He is what we need
and he is available. However as we said, Warburton has said our targets require
their present clubs to find new players.<o:p></o:p></div>

This isn’t exactly news. The clubs been linked with the long haired Australian
all summer long. Traditionally a more defensive midfielder, but given a bit
more license to get forward by Clough last season, he wouldn’t be cheap. But
following the Assombalonga deal, we do have a bit of money to spend. No concrete offers have been made apparently.
Other clubs have also been sniffing around and we need to be careful to not to
lose to other clubs. At 24 time is on his side.<o:p></o:p></div>

<b>Gary Gardner</b><br />
Barely needs an introduction and his name reappeared as linked this weekend. As
we all know his first stint was extremely successful, but his second spell was distinctly
average. He has obvious affection for the club, so his agent may be circling
his name as available to build some interest, as he’s down the Villa pecking
order following Glenn Whelan’s arrival. That would potentially lower his price.</div>

<b>Bryan Heynen</b><br />
The first Belgian named linked. Belgian players are all the rage now following
their abundance of young talent. Heynen plays for Genk in the Belgian top
flight, and is a 6ft 20 year old midfielder. According to Transfermarkt.co.uk
he would cost between £1.5-£2million. He is a holding midfielder which is
exactly what we need. McParland was apparently spotted in Genk, so this looks
like a potential possibility. Genk was the club who sold Ndidi to Leicester.<o:p></o:p></div>

And as surely as McParland was spotted in Genk, then any suitable Genk players
named gets linked. Like 23 year old left back Jere Uronen. We need a left back,
and his is young and with a value of around £1mill. He is a full international
for Finland, but it seems unlikely and just clutching at straws that he would
be signed.<o:p></o:p></div>

<b>Saša Zdjelar</b><br />
By the same token that Genk players are linked, Genk were playing Olympiacos,
who of course are owned by our owner. Sasa is a 22 year old holding midfielder
who could be available after spending last season on loan in Spain at Mallorca.
However a huge stumbling block for this rumour is that he is Serbian. Serbia is
not an EU nation and as such he would require a work permit. This would make it
difficult to get him as he only has 2 caps. Again seems like putting 2 and 2
together and getting some other amount.<o:p></o:p></div>

The English goalkeeper at Rangers has also been linked, which is natural that Warburton’s
former players would be linked. We are linked with Keepers, with it seems some
question marks within the club about Jordan Smith. Smith has won over the fans,
but it looks like the club would also want some more experience around the
club, should as many young keepers do, Smith suffer a dodgy spell. <o:p></o:p></div>
